Dental Implants
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a periodontist places into your jaw.
A small titanium shaft is surgically implanted into the bone and allowed to set.
(The titanium is a metal known for its bio-compatibility and lightweight properties.) The bone grows
around it forming a tight connection, which additionally slows or stops the bone loss that occurs
when the root of a natural tooth is missing.
Once the implant is firmly set in the mouth, the dentist
then works to attach the replacement tooth onto the top of the shaft. This permanent solution has the
advantages over bridge work that it does not stress the surrounding teeth for support.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
Replace one or more teeth without affecting bordering teeth.
Support a bridge and eliminate the need for a removable partial denture.
Provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable.
How do I take care of my dental implants?
Your own teeth require diligent at home oral care and regular
dental visits. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same
care. In order to keep your implant clean and plaque free, brushing and flossing
still apply.
